Drive to Sremska Mitrovica - Sirmium (Latin Sirmium) (today Sremska Mitrovica), was an ancient town and one of the four capitals of the Roman Empire. Sirmium was built at the confluence of the Bosut and the Sava river, on the southern slopes of Fruška Mountain, in the first century. It is assumed that it was founded by the Illyrians. Thanks to the river and shipping, the town grew and developed rapidly. Seven rulers of the Roman Empire were born in Sirmium and its surroundings: Traian Decius, Aurelian, Probus, Maximian, Hostilian, Constantius II and Gratian. The town was the seat of the province of Lower Pannonia, tempo- rary imperial residence, the Episcopal center and camp of the mighty legions who defended the empire from incursions of barbarian tribes. This was a period of I - IV century AD. Sirmium became the capital of the Roman Empire, first time in March, 293, during the reign of Galerius.
