In the monastery church Bosnian ruler Tvrtko I Kotromanić, nephew of Tsar Dusan, was crowned as the The King of Serbs and the sea lands on the 1377. In the 1446 Stefan Vukcic Kosača declared himself "Herzeg of Saint Sava", at Mileševa. That is how Herzegovina got it’s name .
The monastery is now the seat of the Serbian Orthodox Church diocese.
Frescoes of Mileševa are one of the best achievements of 13th European century art, and from them the most famous White Angel, which is part of the fresco “scent carriers on the tomb of Christ”. Besides the White Angel, other masterpieces are Virgin of the Annunciation and the founders' composition with the portrait of King Vladimir. These works also represent the highest achievements of art of that time in Europe.
